Today I witnessed a glimpse into the future and saw a preview to the vision I have for arts and education hairdressing academy. When starting the school my goal was to continue to upgrade the hairdressing industry but this time at its core. Not as before in the salon. I grew weary of retraining hairdressers with new license in hand hopeful and eager to for greatness. You know it is is the words out of every hairdressers mouth. “ just go to any old beauty school I’ll retrain you when you get out”. Well money spent is money spent … however a&e is expecting more from the future hairdresser by; not just getting the student to state board, but by offering them classes workshops and model situations that have been until recently, reserved for experienced hairdressers. By expecting more from this new generation of artists the student rises to the occasion when put to the test and they are achieving more because we expect more. This weekend I did see much of that vision. In the classroom I saw eager beginners alongside seasoned professionals working through the technical classics. Challenging and necessary, this class was a seed planted just a few years back. With more and more students seeking out alternative options to the traditional beauty school, arts and education is fulfilling the hopes of many students that have been searching… a learning laboratory that elevates the traditional curriculum at its core. I Choose happy An authentically empowered person is incapable of making anyone or anything a victim. That authentically empowered person is one who is strong, so empowered, that the idea of using force against another part of his or her consciousness.
When action needs to be taken you take it yourself you learn from bad experiences instead of repeating them over and over. You expect the best from yourself but when it doesn’t happen you get over it

It is a choice really- in our seminars and trainings we ask the team, do you want to be happy? Or miserable? They all choose happy… I walk around the room and they all choose happy… but when the chips are down we can often choose miserable… the danger is creating a groove a pattern and soon a broken record that becomes the fabric of who we are … that fabric determines our self talk and that self talk that plays over and over in our heads becomes the driving force and the unfortunate pattern of our life.

Knowing that cliché that this is the first day of the rest of your life… WE are choosing HAPPY we have all the tools residing in our amazing minds that can change that voice in our heads empowered only by ourselves and make the change now …so our future is the one we make on purpose.

Transitional Cutting- This course is a revolving body of work that will lead you to explore texturizing and specializing and to grow your repertoire of service offerings. We offer three programs —each presenting different techniques and real-time work that you can begin using immediately.
Prerequisite: Women's Basic Cutting Fundamental

Transitional Color- This course is a revolving body of work offering three programs that each present different techniques and real-time work that you can begin using immediately. Students receiving certificates from these programs can offer a greater variety of color services to their clients —giving them a competitive advantage.
Long Hairdressing- Students will learn to identify the needs of the clients and how to create a foundation for complicated and challenging long hairdressing options —making them highly marketable for Runway session stylist, bridal, prom and special event hairdressing.

Bridal Services- Provides insight and tutelage for the key aspects of working with brides —from consultation to wedding day. Students walk away with systems and forms for beginning the journey of becoming a bridal service coordinator.

Teacher Training- Two weeks long fundamental for stylists wanting to become an instructor.
By director-recommended invite only.

Public Speaking- Confidence and overall professionalism for job search, client-building and building a sustainable career in the beauty industry. This course offers the student time to take an inventory of who they are and where they want to go. It poses questions that help the student begin to take full responsibility for themselves, empowering them to make choices to live their best life ...whatever that life may be. We believe that conquering fear opens doors to a life without fear. The activities are fun and, once you get into it, you'll really forge some powerful relationships. Students walk away with their own personal mission statement, a life purpose, goals, a list of the 10 greatest things they will do, and much more. This Holiday Season Creating Beauty, aka: industrie HAIRDRESSING, form+function HAIRDRESSING and Arts & Education HAIRDRESSING Academy, has chosen to donate their time and talent to helping out Heritage House.

Heritage House is a non-profit organization which provides a safe haven for at-risk, teenage girls. They are committed to providing a nurturing and loving home, building self-esteem, and establishing life skills essential for a promising new future.

On Monday December 20th, we will present a "Creating Beauty Inside- Out" message followed by a blow- dry and make up demo. After the presentation and a potluck lunch, our team will doing make-overs for the girls from Heritage House.

Hairdressers are passionate people. At least the ones I have had the pleasure of working with. Gregarious folks with a the gift of the gab and the soul of Leonardo da Vinci painter sculptor architect with an unquenchable curiosity.

These are the people I know from the industry I love and have loved since 1985. Yet back then these people were not often ready to jump into the world of hairdressing. In fact I was one of those people. My father flew out of his skin the day I expressed to him I wanted to go to “Beauty School” and become a hairdresser… the beauty school drop out from the movie Grease came to his mind, but after some persuasion and explanation that my true passion lies ON BROADWAY… where I would audition and take class while supporting myself thru a behind the chair career as a “Beauty Operator” (well back then we were often called that… no really) what I did not know then was that I would fall in love with hairdressing and forget all about Broadway.

The process of enrolling at LaVonnes Beauty Academy was embarrassing and once there my father’s response to my decision played out in my head over and over as I went to school with 95% of the unsavory people my dad had warned me about, save one, Jill Vincent.

Once graduated, my journey was fast, as it only took showing up, being on time, and a small amount of advanced education to make it big at that time. Yet the grumblings were there and the evolution of a worthy profession on the horizon, as companies like TIGI were recruiting talented hairdressers to take a ride and help to upgrade the hairdressing industry. After a few stopovers (1) Crazy Horse Hair Salon, on the hill in Boulder and (2) an ultra weird experience at Hollywood Salon downtown on Pearl Street. I Opened My own doors, The Parlour, on Walnut Street, and then began to see the true culprit in the roadblock in hairdressing….THE BEAUTY SCHOOL.

Selling The Parlour inc. a few years ago, I began a new adventure... Creating Beauty Inside->OUT and began to dig deep for a new kind of concept that suits today's industry. I began to look back on the bulk of my career while training hundreds of hairdressers for my own salon floor. If only there was an opportunity to bring education into the real world salon as the school level; not just post beauty school. Apprenticeship and salon assistants were the way to go and still are if you want a quality hairdresser working beside you, but the retraining and unlearning that had to happen, was expensive for us and the newly graduated beauty school student. Silly really… why were we taking students from school only to invest our time and money in retraining them?
I will Point the finger here… THE BEAUTY SCHOOL.

So after years and years (well 20 years), of retraining hairdressers, I now have begun a revolution thru Arts and Education Hairdressing Academy Founded in 2008. Joining forces with The Department of Labor, The Division of Private Occupational Schools and DORA, we are now training the true professional; that student wanting an artful career in a high end salon (no great clippers here), and giving them the vision, the eye and the rigorous training we owe our profession. We do this at A&E by combining basics, transitional and advanced classes rolled onto one curriculum for the artistic minded and serious salon professional desiring a career in high end salons. This is then coupled with a master hairdresser in our salon apprentice community accros the greater Denver area through registered apprenticeship. Once graduated from A&E our students have a salon family and the salon has a stylist who are ready to go!

Arts & Education Hairdressing Academy Students are serious about art, quality design, functionality, customer service, and surrounding themselves and rubbing elbows with likeminded professionals who too desire more from our industry’s schools.
Low student to teacher ratios-6:1 riggerous training, and tough accerptents requirements, we have set out to change the paradigm of beauty school.

YOU HAVE THE POWER- It has been right there all along.

Over the Years as a leader many of my co-workers and students have heard me talking about a “Victim Mentality”. That phrase usually is heard during my talk when I start in with the idea that the first step to personal success is taking responsibility for yourself… that YOU are the sum total of all of your decisions up to NOW. The notion that it is someone’s or something’s fault that brought you to your current situation in life. My dad spoke often of this and now looking back he is truly a man who has never been a victim in life.

As I grew up with this idea of taking responsibility for myself and not pointing the finger or casting blame for any high or low in my life, I came along Steven Covey’s Book “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” In his book he talks of monumental humans such as Victor Frankl who wrote: The Mans Search for Meaning. Victor Frankl was a Jewish survivor of the holocaust. He said-“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”

And- “When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves.”

These are all insights on helping to understand that being a victim in life is saying I do not take responsibility for myself my situation. I have continued to challenge my teams and students around the globe to release the victim mentality and to look inside to the greatest you that does indeed exist in all of us and say “No!” I take responsibility for all of the decisions actions and thoughts that have brought me to this point and then realize I am the sum total of my thoughts.

I happen to believe that people can free themselves from a victim mentality by becoming responsible for their own actions and emotions. Finding out what troubles you is half the cure. The second step is to recognize that the world owes you nothing. Finally, the third step is to know you are responsible. You may have been bullied suppressed or shut down by people, but in the end, we are all our own people.

I first learned that training new team members is the first and foremost when building a team. In the hairdressing industry I was not going to limit my training program to hairdressing only… that is a small piece in my mind. The bigger piece of the training is empowerment, helping your team to grow into better people and the evolution of helping them first take responsibility for themselves. Share with them that is not their grandparents nor their parents, not their zodiac sign, or that they are a middle kid that makes them who they are today…. It is their choice to be who they are and work towards what they want to be… I have often said to the team “what sign do you want to be?” That is sometimes groundbreaking for a new team member, but after a while you will attract team members that have already taken responsibility for themselves, they have stopped pointing the finger, and have looked in the mirror long enough to make the choice to be who they want to be!

Fourth of July Parade in Our Community!

There we were at 6 am on Sunday morning ready to prep our models for the fourth of July Parade. The cloudy overcast day made it seem even earlier as Marisa, Lindsey, and I layed out our tools.The Quinn Girls arrived shortly after us ready to be the stars of the parade. The goody bags of candy were all ready to throw out into the crowd or onlookers. The Tutu clad team arrived at the line up with Tasha (our most petite stylist)sat up in the big blue truck. Becca was on hand to take hold of Violet and Roxy our 3 and 4 year old paraders while Genveva, looking fabulous and very patriotic, with the help of lindsey, held the banner as we began the march!

Rachelle, looking as glamourous as usual, stood waiting with flyers in hand. My Son Oliver and my dear Husband Ben aided by my daughter Lily with the help of my neice Emma, and thier friends Jensen and Tessa ... bed head and all... giggled while they prepared to throw candy and hand out fylers to their friends and neighbors at Superior Fourth of July Parade.

The result was sheer fun as we saw our clients friend family and other onlookers who seemed happy to see the avant garde hairdresing going on as the float(Truck) passed by.
Thank you all ... we had so much fun serving our form+function purpose by being part of our community and participating in such a great event!

When applying for hairdressing school, you should consider the student-teacher ratio. Though certain schools may boast of a large number of students that enroll in their classes every year, a skeletal faculty might not be enough to properly handle the student body. As a result, learning is compromised; the quality of education may not be at par anymore.Fortunately, Arts and Education pays attention to our Academy’s population. We are a unique offering for students wishing to make a living in the art and service of hairdressing as our student curriculum is taught as hairstylist apprenticeship. Students receive the basic knowledge required by the State Board of Cosmetology, in addition to a progressive and modern curriculum.

Everyday we are committed to collecting your clippings from industrie hairdressing arts and education academy and form+function Hairdressing, boxing it up and sending it off to become hair mats and boom.

Please know that you are helping in the cause every time you come in for a haircut or bang trim... you do not need to do a thing!! Just keep doing what you are doing!

History of the mat & boom:
Matter of Trust is collaborating with thousands of salons throughout the US and abroad, that donate their hair clippings to soak up oil spills. Last year over 2,600 oil spills occurred in the world. They weren't all are high profile, but most had an impact on the environment. Phil McCrory, a hair stylist from Alabama, first discovered how hair can help. He was shampooing an oily head of hair while watching TV coverage on the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. He noticed the fur on the Alaskan otters completely soaked with oil and it just occurred to him. "We shampoo because hair collects oil." He began testing how much petroleum oil he could collect with the hair clipping from the floor of his salon. Phil then invented the hairmat which is made from purchased hair and felted in China. Please find Phil and our friends at www.Ottimat.com. For the last 10 years we have partnered with Phil and Ottimat to see if we can create a National Natural Fiber Recycling System so that we could make the mats here the way we make the booms.

The US has over 300,000 hair salons and each cuts an average of a pound of hair per day. Groomers usually cut 3 pounds per day! Donors generously pay out of pocket for postage to send their swept up hair clippings to either where there are temorary donated storage spaces for emergency spills or our warehouse when space is available. There we make "booms" by stuffing hair, fur, wastewool, etc. into donated recycled nylons and mesh. We do the fundraising and outreach for this International Natural Fiber Recycling campaign through our posters in participating salons and with the help of the press.

We are also fundraising for a larger permanent warehouse here in California to make hair booms. We also believe that collection kiosks at US harbors will provide green jobs and booms for many of the 2,600 little oil spill emergencies that occurs in the world annually. We aim to create green jobs programs concentrating on those transitioning out of foster care (at risk youth 18-22 years old) for fiber collection and boom making. We also aim to rekindle the textile industry in the US so that we can manufacture the felted hair mats here again as well.

Just Say No to Gossip Negitivity And Say Goodbye To The "Hairapist"

Hair salons have historically been known for gathering gossip. It has been that way for years and years. I have even heard women walk through the door of a salon and the first words out of their mouth are. "Ok what's the dirt?” The tabloid magazine capitalize on this type of thinking, in turn making any bit of gossip; a photo, a conversation and a slight chance at the truth, the object of the paparazzi. This has become such a lucrative job to gather some proof that it is nearly impossible for celebrities to live private lives or heck have private moments.

Venting can also be a source of therapy for clients in the salon which in some ways is useful and harmless… some people have even gone as far to call the stylist their “hairapist” This offers a safe place to just vent, talk things thru with an objective non involved person. Clients even call it “breaking up” with their stylist when they decide to switch stylists. Yet I have known stylists who carry that weight of everyone’s problems home with them and each day they are worn down by the problems of their clients.

Weather a place to gather gossip or seek a an outlet for your woes creating beauty has a definite response to all of this and it lies within our mission-

It started with a book I read called Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman where he gave proof that people are wired to connect, that we do give off an energy that you can not see but can most definitely feel. He talks about how 2 people will mirror each others body temperature and breathing rate during a conversation and the “leader” will define that rate and temperature without saying a word. Sometimes parents remove this instinct with small children in hope that that their children will have good manners when meeting someone new… but the child’s instincts are often right on when they do not like someone or shy away from strangers. So the proof that this “energy” exists is compelling to us at Creating Beauty because it can directly effect how client feels when they walk into our salons, and sit with our stylists. Controlling our moods and being self-aware is a hallmark of developing our teams because we often are the leader behind the chair and set the tone for the experience. But better yet, having an entire team that understands this can be a powerful force in the community because when clients leave our salons they not only look great but they feel great. They have lightness to their step and an all over feeling of goodness because we have made the choice to up lift, to work towards solving problems rather than complaining about them. This same energy is then passed to the barista at the local coffee shop, then to thier next customer and out into the world.( ripples)
Our clients have come to know that the conversations and feelings we have will often be productive in creating that inner beauty that comes with a great outlook on life.

Hairdressing is an amazing profession when you are the modern hairdresser. Working in a salon with clients and then having all of the opportunities for professional growth, technical training and the vast learning curve from new stylist to proficient technician…

Our career offers the evolution of creative architect, designer, artist and sculptor. Yet something happens in a lot of us, at least it did for me as I became more seasoned as a hairdresser.Over the years I felt as if there has got to be more then cutting the stuff that grows out of the top of peoples heads, and “dolling” it all up for fashions sake… then it occurred to me that we do so much more behind that chair.

After years of taking classes, becoming an educator, mentor, and salon owner; I realized there was a soul to this hairdressing thing … that we go past the outside, past the image of what people see, and begin to see within….. Within our own hearts and into the lives and evolution of our clients, and perhaps even touch the soul, in many ways, as we sit and cut, color and style the hair on top of our clients head…

Over the years the term “burn-out” lingered in the world of salon stylist… the idea that what we did every day got old. Upon first hearing the term, I was determined to not let “it” happen to me.

Now I believe “burnout” happens for a few reasons in the life of a stylist ( or any profession for that matter) here a few reasons I think burn out happens

1. They got into hairdressing for the wrong reasons… easy money is a biggie
2. The stylist neglects to stretch and grow past their comfort zone
3. The stylist attracts a clientele that gets “stuck” with their fashion statement never wanting change, in-tern making hair shows and advanced classes a buffet of learning that they can never use in their salon
4. The stylist becomes consumed by the machine of celebrity, name brands, trend and making them at first slaves to fashion and then to often times “snooty” because they begin to judge others by the “outside” only looking at the size of their bag, if their boot heel is in fashion and if those around them fit the medias take on what’s “in” what’s “now”

We look only at the “Outside” of hairdressing and never ask the questions:

What is my purpose when I go to work everyday?

What is the higher reason for doing what I do each and everyday?

What value do I bring to others while I am working?

How can I live an integrated life where work is just an extension of who I am?

How can I serve my community, my co workers, and my clients?

Pretty heavy I know, but every hairdresser knows that there is the “outside” client, the image, décor and reputation of the salon, the overall “appearance” of everything… but I challenge us all to dig deeper for a balance between the inside and the out. That under every gorgeous head of hair is a human person with dreams desires heartache passion, hurt joy desire and fear. And we all full well know that is hard to separate the outside from the in.

By understanding the power of great self talk, motivating with positives, and having a positive rebirth of ourselves we can make a positive difference from the inside -out-

I am a firm believer that the most beautiful people are confident happy people who have an abundance mentality, they keep things… material things in perspective and seem to float in and out of the days with the secret to life in their back pocket and it shows on their face, in the actions as they radiate beauty gratitude and kindness.

What does this mean????
Well as a salon owner, and passionate one at that, this statement has everything to do with giving it your all in everything you do. Whether it is cutting a Bob or raising children we do not always get the results that coincide with your effort and that can be a disappointment…… good effort sounds fine… well good is just not enough! We must give it all we’ve got to get the gold medal. We need to pour our hearts into the endeavor to get the results we dream of… and in the famous words of Winston Churchill. 'Never Never Never give up”

Now in managing and leading people we have the choice to offer and give value to people… or… we can manage them. We can mentor them into great stylists with the whole person in mind, or we can show them their chair, introduce them to the team, pat them on the back and say go for it…

Preparing Your Team for Success

So you have hired some great people but before you set them free on the salon floor they need to look at the “playbook”

Developing people is time-consuming and does cost you a bit, but putting unprepared stylists on the floor is way more costly and you end up spending more time backtracking and picking up the pieces.

Setting them up to SUCCEED

Orientation is the first step in getting your new team members ready.

Orientation should include:
1. handbook and employee handbook
2. Mission statement
3. Employee information sheet( to be filed at the salon)
4. Commission scale and pricing sheet (must be signed and filed)
5. W4 and I9( must be filed)
6. Personnel file check list

Orientation Part 2- Must be completed within 1 month of orientation period

Product knowledge- All retail brands and your salons color line product knowledge each is scheduled and given one hour per unit.

Orientation Part 3-
This orientation includes shampooing, blow drying and mixing color. This class will take up to 2-4 hours. Models required: 1 curly, one straight, both shoulder length and longer. The new team member needs to have all blow drying tools. (Blow dryer brushes and clips)

There will be a color mixing quiz one week after the orientation given by the salon coordinator (an answer Key will be provided to check the quiz) develop systems and operations where your team and your clients have consistency in all areas of you salon. Include a signature consultation and shampoo to set your team apart.

We use this to prepare our salon assistants at industrieHAIRDRESSING,
but use a modified offering for our form+function HAIRDRESSING team...
You insert your technical training program where it makes sence in this process.

People love knowing what you expect from them... imagine bowling with a curtain hiding the pins... then just as you hear the pins drop the person behind the curtain tells you that you hit 3, but neglects to tell you which ones... so when you go for your second try... you have no idea what you are aiming for...

That is what we do when we do not set clear expectations.

Form+Function HAIRDRESSING was in idea I had about 5 years ago. Then, I had named it Luckystar.. yet busy growing The Parlour and having the idea reprioritized again and again the concept came flooding back when I sold The Parlour inc. two years ago, and pondered my future options.

My unquenchable desire to create something new, combined with the knowhow of over 20 years of training hairdressers and serving clients, I realized there was an entire niche not having a chance to spread the Creating Beauty Inside->Out message, a whole group of hairdressers who need the right start and clients who craved convenience, a community driven location, and dare I will say it...? a great price… It was so clear in my mind …. I just had to give credence to the idea.

From Individuals To Team: Because 2+2 Can Equal 5,6 or more

Goal… to Build a Team Environment-

Many of you may know that I opened the doors of my first salon in 1989.. I was 23 years old and built it out of the desire to upgrade our industry. I felt back then the lack of professionalism was rampant and the need for leadership was obvious.

I learned quickly that just because I tell you what to do does not mean that you will do it.
....So I turned to my dad for advice.

As an entrepreneur and a Dale Carnegie graduate himself (plus one of 18 kids) he had great advice.

I first learned that training new team members is the first and foremost when building a team. In the hairdressing industry I was not going to limit my training program to hairdressing only… that is a small piece in my mind. The bigger piece of the training is empowerment, helping your team to grow into better people, an evolution of helping them first take responsibility for themselves. Share with them that is not their grandparents nor their parents, not their zodiac sign, or that they are a middle kid that makes them who they are today…. It is their choice to be who they are and work towards what they want to be… I have often said to the team “what sign do you want to be?” That is sometimes groundbreaking for a new team member, but after a while you will attract team members that have already taken responsibility for themselves, they have stopped pointing the finger, and have looked in the mirror long enough to make the choice to be who they want to be!

Wow… so here I was ready to do it!! I am going to build a team!

So I went on a journey learning how to have a great meeting, to plant seeds of greatness, and get "buy in" on every decision I made. This at first seemed like I was running my company like a democracy! I know know that someone has to make the final decision and that person was me… I was the one who had everything to loose…

Getting Buy in-

Now many young leaders might think that you then turn over all decision making to your entire team; New and old, newbie’s and veterans. That does not work for me…I created an inner council of leaders who will help me see the entire picture first, synergize, and then once all of our thoughts and ideas have had time to percolate, then is when I would I launch the plans at a companywide meeting.

Once in the companywide meeting,you take the whole group thru your thought process and the decision making to help them understand why you made the decision, and then you get their help in implementation… the how-tos, the when’s, and all the while reiterating the whys, so the journey becomes a team journey under your leadership.

I have made many decisions that the entire team did not always agree with but I helped my team to understand the whys so I could intimately enlist their help.

How??? It always goes back to the mission and purpose… reverting to the reasons why you are in business are the guide to every decision you make from there on out.

Thinking Win Win When You Have a Tonya Harding Chasing You Around

I have often been heard saying that art borrows from art and from every good idea come and evolution of that idea which can improve on that idea and so forth and so on…. But to "Copy"... Like on a test in school… is cheating.

"COPY" An imitation or reproduction of an original; a duplicate: a copy of a painting; made two copies of the letter.

Imitate: To appear like; resemble.

Original-a person of fresh initiative or inventive capacity
Originality the source or cause from which something arises; specifically : originator
2 that from which a copy, reproduction, or translation is made b : a work composed firsthand
3 a person of fresh initiative or inventive capacity b : a unique or eccentric person

Now my parents and teachers have told me that copying is a form of flattery
... but copying to Compete just seems un original and unimaginative and like the imitation it can never be as good as the original.

Rather than comptete I have gone with an abundance mentality... that there is enough to go around... and more like the hedgehog than the sly fox, I have been less comparing and more introspective.

I Love the concept of Win Win-being in a situation in which the outcome benefits each of two often opposing groups

Compete-To strive against (others) for victory: contend, contest, emulate, rival

Now I have always been a big proponent of win win. And I do like to compete and win... but at what cost?

Nancy Kerrigan was attacked after a practice session, struck on the knee with a lead pipe.... compteing to take someone out...???? That is not my style.

To do that--to achieve that balance between courage and consideration--is the essence of real maturity and is fundamental to win-win.

Ok so why all the fuss today? Why the rant?

I thought I might bring to light a few principals which are the cornerstone of Creating Beauty’s management and leadership style. We are peaceful warriors competing with ourselves as we truly believe in "win win"

After Over 20 years in business I have maintained the win win... when the chips are down when push comes to shove and even when my families lifestyle and well being has been threatened, a character-based code was at the forefront ...win win... and knowing that what I do as the leader, will set the tone to those around me...

The lack of an abundance mentality shows little character, hardly any substance and those who possess it will be the loser inside the quiets voices inside their head...

It is a rough world sometimes, but holding true to pricniple centered living has been the mainstay in my life and in business...

Part 7
Did you know that I had another education Company years ago call Arts and Education Enterprises? Yep…We( Sennen, Julie, Guy and I) had such grand hopes there in 19?? We had so much to share and great photos and enthusiasm and talent and and and… no students… Robert Stafford was amazing to us… he would feature us on the cover of his industry publications advertise us in his education calendar and events pages… he was wonderful! And yes we had a few students here and there but with more instructors in the classroom than students and usually more models than instructors, we were hardly successful… but looking back it was those early days of honing in on my teaching skills and preparing curriculum with all kinds of collateral materials paved the way for new offerings and wonderful opportunities… But I did not give up…. I refused…

Years later I ran into David at a show at the Fillmore Theater and we were chatting about everything. I mentioned to him that if ever he needed help I would be happy to do anything… finishing back stage, helping on shoots etc… and not too long after I found myself chatting with Rob Wilcox and I think it was Dan Easton at the time at the Tattered Cover café. We talked and talked and the next thing I knew I was hired as the technical director for MOP and asked to create the message that would weave thru the MOP Brand. The pieces of my career where like stepping stones toward my goal to doing my part in uplifting and improving our industry…

Then it came to me… we can be the heart and soul of our industry.. if we are kind to the earth let us create a kind, egoless message where the barriers and the fear and the competition are put aside and make room for beautiful and safe environments for students to come learn and grow with our message… thru kindness and interdependency… MOP... Part 5-
We instill in our instructors the importance of treating people right before, during and after the class. And we work hard at creating a level of trust so that students enter our environment and know they are among friends. Our methodology helps people believe in themselves —empowering them to reach their personal best in all areas of their lives. As a result, Arts & Education Hairdressing Academy turns out truly special people who are equipped to empower others...selflessly.

If I was going to build a team anywhere… and I believe in team wholeheartedly, we were going to really put together a program that served all aspects of what I felt was important in the classroom that would respond to the needs of the educator the student and ultimately the clients. So using the classroom setting coupled with public speaking and great information we built a teacher training program. At first we all went through every aspect of training (men’s women’s, color Chemical relaxing etc…) and we all helped teach the classes (all meaning 3-4 of us) so using everything I had in my head from my education we created technical’s, (Imagery, step by steps, and head sheets with a set of Why’s to arm everyone with the purpose begin what they were doing. We began with Women’s Cutting, then moved into men’s cutting.
Which brings me to David Raccuglia in 1994- I was introduced to him after a demo in Denver and we both had just had our first baby’s… Oliver(Me) and Olivia (him) Seriously they are a month apart- we got to talking about photography and living in Boulder and that I had been to Minneapolis and met Horst yadida yadida and we became friends. He was so much fun to talk to and so many great ideas about what was missing in our industry and all the great experience he had to share was fascinating. We were both delving into photography at the time which is another story for another blog… But his take on men’s hair was groundbreaking (duh) and I was a faithful follower from that day on on a sweet side note… My Father was a model for him at the Boulder Theater all those years ago… I can remember him, strutting his stuff on that stage…. But David and Dominique and Andy… were the mentors of my time and each of them taught in my salon as they too were growing their brand called American Crew.

Well I would be lying if you think I was doing this all on my own… once the ground work was set with all of this training, education, sharing, and evolving…I had the joy of bringing my father, Eugene J Cahill SR, into the classroom and again I was the student… and the class?... Public Speaking.

There we all were, the core team of the then amazing Parlour; Holly and Tim Tignor included, at the then “Spectrum Salon Consultants” as we were lucky enough to use The Forum for this first ever Inside Out Public Speaking program- at the time called Product #1.

It was 12 weeks, meeting once per week…. delving in to the ins and outs of Dale Carnegie… yep hairdressers and Dale Carnegie. Yet I knew being raised by this charismatic man, my father, this would be the thing that would move us from good to great! The art team and few core educators, yep, that was my team in all of the extras outside of the day to day behind the chair…. these were the over-achievers, the one striving for excellence in all areas of their lives. The were the people I rubbed elbows with and we were shifting the paradigm big time. We delved deep into the “power of the mind”, “dominant thought”,"self Talk", all while learning how to speak in public; doing Crazy skits (“Iknow a Man in The Ranks” for those who remember) and what seemed like a million talks in big and small groups with champions and over top antics to get us feeling right in our own skin… building confidence to get over yourself and make others feel great!

Yep I suppose the biggest influence in my life was my dad and what he did everyday as he loved me and taught me I can do anything.

So guess what…? As a result of all of this we have, as part of our curriculum, Public Speaking!

Because or this commitment to excellence,the education team was born… and soon after the leadership team.

Arts & Education Hairdressing Academy has developed an innovative line up of learning for students just starting out, continuing to seasoned artists looking for a re-fresh.

Curriculum- Well on my journey of training post graduates from the local schools I did A LOT of learning myself… man when you teach you have got to own that information and walk the walk and talk the talk… and I will say it -anyone who want to master anything should teach it… and be responsible for that information… Oh and I had amazing mentors!

-The first of which was the great Stephen Moody… Stephen Moody: As Executive Director, International Education of Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, Moody joined Sassoon in 1980. Now Executive Director of International Education at the The Sassoon Academy. When I met him it was in early 1990 then head master at the Sassoon Academy when I trained under him in Santa Monica. What an incredible man. Kind knowledgeable, patient and lovely to everyone he spoke with, models, students, other educators... What a beautiful role model for us all! He even cut my hair into this quiff that changed my world and the way I approached my own fashion statement forever…
It was from him that I gained the courage to try my hand at truly training my assistants properly; first by sharing the Vidal Sassoon techniques with my team and then anyone who came to work with me thereafter.

Then there was the fabulous and perfectly poised Zoe Harte who put method to my teaching- Now VP Education at TIGI/Toni & Guy , I had the complete pleasure of working with her on and off in Dallas and in Denver from1992-1998. She put me on the road to explaining everything I did in the classroom with purpose and consistency. I will still, to this day, be recapping a haircut and remembering her words’ lines and sections- distribution- and how it’s cut”

From there my hero James Morrison-(toni&guy) I had the complete pleasure of sharing the platform and doing many shows, seminars with him as he brought to me what is now known as the “spiritual” side to hairdressing. Traveling with James was always a treat as remember driving in the car and listening to “Fields of Gold” on a fall day with the windows open getting to the next venue. It was James who brought out my true desire and now passionate purpose in building the Creating Beauty: Inside-->Out Brand… http://creating-beauty.com/ to motivate and inspire hairdressers to be more in their life, translating compassion, excellent communication, and a love for people in a whole new light- it was James who helped me to find my voice which lead to all sorts of personal growth and a legacy I am very proud of.

You see at the time the journey was day by day… but looking back it becomes a chain of events that leads you to where you are today

Part 2

The Hairstylist Apprenticeship Program is specifically designed for students who chose to focus their career on the art of hairdressing. This program will not only teach you theoretical principles of haircutting, coloring and styling in a classroom setting, but will also provide one-on-one, hands-on training in one of our many participating salons... all while earning a salary —so you can earn while you learn.

On my walkabout I set up the now training program that exists today across the Front Range at my old digs and my starter salons The Parlour.

But clearly there had to be more- another way- We were still taking students out of the old paradigm of “Beauty School” and re-training them-

Now I know there are pockets of schools around the globe that do it well… but in my mind their must be a better way- So the inkling of a new type of school was on the horizon…an apprenticeship school taken from the old way where you would put on your best frock and hang about a master stylist in hopes he would teach you everything he/she knows “I’ll sweep for you, I will walk your dog, I will do what it takes if you teach me what you know” kind of apprenticeship- coupled with ‘ the basics of a traditional beauty school- leaving most of the training to the host salon. This has been going on here in Colorado for a few year and wow... it was a start no doubt.

But back in the traditional apprenticeship…. back when Vidal was growing up in the shops there was only the salon…no “beauty school”. Just artisans passing their knowledge to the junior… (I do not even think there was state board back then) that is what they called them then “juniors” There were no stand alone schools where you went to work on shampoo and sets, no beauty school instructor who had no more training then the beautician before her. Just you and the master... and it took a while but that is how they did it.

...But now and in more recent times you do have to have a license and licensing is governed by the state board... and for a long time now, when a young inspired future hairdresser asked us,” where should I go to school" We would say... and we have all said it… “Go to school anywhere and then when you get out you can take advanced classes and work under a top salon owner” Heck that’s what I heard and that what I have said… “Just get your license and once you get out that is where the learning begins”

Yet I was the salon owner retraining these stylists and that costs money and time.

MY HISTORY OF WHAT BEAUTY SCHOOL USED TO MEAN

part one

While creating this academy, our focus was on what our students will become as a result of the A&E experience: people who feel right in their own skin and who believe in themselves so confidently that they can help others believe in themselves. Just thinking of this potential fulfillment in so many lives makes us happy.

I have been training Hairdressers for 20 years. At first it was having my own assistant. Yet I fell short at first because I was training my assistant how I was “trained” as an assistant. Yep I assisted back in the day and was paid $1 per shampoo, $2 to rinse color, and $3 to rinse a perm. Now that was it really... but my hope was not to make millions as an assistant; and that was abundantly clear, because at the time, I was used on an as needed basis... so if the stylist did not need me they did it themselves and saved the buck or two. There I was in my lime green pencil skirt, my peter max knock off designed by Esprit and my wing tip patent leather shoes, topped with my Annie Lenox ultra short platinum blonde hair- awaiting the day when I was hairdressing star!

Well clearly that was not the way to get there…so I went to hair show after hair show getting ahead in my field and in my salon and quickly.. …like so fast I had to have set records…. I built my clientele and learned on my own. Back then I was then the first to do foil highlights in my salon on the hill in Boulder Colorado (Crazyhorse Hair Salon )

Yet that was how I was trained I watched and watched the others do their work until (thru some sort of osmosis) I learned what they were doing… sad but true. Yet from that, my Purpose was born! I was going to change the way we passed on knowledge. So I opened my first salon in Downtown Boulder in 1989 at 1175 Walnut Street. I hired my first assistant- Shannon, and did to her what they did to me at Crazyhorse….. made her watch.

Well looking back I realized 2 very crucial elements to all of this. One was that we all came from dodgy American beauty schools back then , and worked on shampoo and sets and were taught by others who did the same thing. That’s when I went on my

LATHER RINSE REPEAT

It seems and though the last few years have been an endless cycle of lather rinse repeat. The deep cleanse of putting the past away and forging forward with the eternal optimism that has been the mainstay of my life it still serving me; but I must say.., these few years have taken their toll. Being a big proponent of dominant thought, perception is reality and a general faith in the world and in myself.. I have been part pillar of strength, part punching bag and a bit of a wounded solder… yet the recent lather rinse repeat cycle has come to an end regarding this chapter in my life.

Like the over flat ironed hair that has been teased, sprayed, been put under a hat; each time I repair and renew using my tools, support from my friends, and all the powerful things I have learned from mentors and teachers I have been blessed to have on my journey…I have healed from within… because I knew all along that I alone had the key I alone could make the change-

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall;
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses
And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again!

I continue to turn the other cheek... and even though I have only been met by more hate and hurt I have stayed true to my principals and I have forgiven again and again and with that forgiveness I have grown strong and powerful from it all.

You see I grew up with this idea of taking responsibility for myself and not pointing the finger or casting blame for any high or low in my life. I am reminded of Victor Frankl who wrote: The Mans Search for Meaning. He said-“The one thing you can’t take away from me is the way I choose to respond. The last of one’s freedoms is to choose ones attitude in any given circumstance.”

And- “When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves.”

An authentically empowered person is incapable of making anyone or anything a victim. That authentically empowered person is one who is strong, so empowered, that the idea of using force against another part of his or her consciousness.
When action needs to be taken you take it yourself you learn from bad experiences instead of repeating them over and over. You expect the best from yourself but when it doesn’t happen you get over it

It is a choice really- in our seminars and trainings we ask the team, do you want to be happy? Or miserable? They all choose happy… I walk around the room and they all choose happy… but when the chips are down we can often choose miserable… the danger is creating a groove a pattern and soon a broken record that becomes the fabric of who we are … that fabric determines our self talk and that self talk that plays over and over in our heads becomes the driving force and the unfortunate pattern of our life.

Knowing that cliché that this is the first day of the rest of your life… WE are choosing HAPPY we have all the tools residing in our amazing minds that can change that voice in our heads empowered only by ourselves and make the change now …so our future is the one we make on purpose.

NO Discipline Recap

The out pouring of love and gratitude was over whelming- the love and human-kindness was humbling and life giving in a tumultuous couple of years- I am warmed and inspired by the many many people who came out to the NO DISCIPLINE Show. Your generosity with the donations for the Alzheimer Association and the camaraderie shown with your attendance, participation, comments and contagious happiness was powerful in so many ways. We were all filled with such joy by the beautiful models who gave their time and grace for this event; it was outstanding and brings me to tears as I reflect back on the day. The love they showed toward one another offering themselves to be at the mercy of our art form and yet doing that with style and elegance... These ladies are some of the finest I have ever met or worked with in my 24 year career in the beauty business- thank you new friends for all of that.

A huge shout out to Amy Denker and Pam Wallace who together with P&G and Aerial were so generous in providing gifts for the models!

Gabe and Mary Grace were both on hand to take Photos and help those who could not be there feeling as if they were indeed part of the love and beauty in the room as the afternoon unfolded.

AND all I can say is WOW… Dana ….the many talents of Dana! Dana was there from the opening soirée and rode the ride right up until well after the show! She managed to handle all the catering, the t-shirt design and production and was there in a pinch to help everyone with anything and as an arts and ed student… the hair as well!

Most importantly I need to tell you that the Creating Beauty Team was outstanding- now I have done 20-30 of these shows throughout my career and never have had the grace to be surrounded by such selflessness, humility, and sheer joy for what we do as artists. I and was taken aback by the egoless manner that EVERYONE employed- hats off to the entire team for putting together such a marvelous effort and such a show of togetherness and duty to the models, the work, the cause and one another- This all began at a small soirée at form+function with Marisa, Dana, Kristen, and Lily

I am blessed and privileged to be in such a presence of so much love and kindness.

A great thanks and crazy love goes to my family- thank you Oliver Henry Lily and of course my Ben for all of their work patience with me and overall time and energy in helping this event to be so sweet. The take down and set up was enormous and they did it smiling (well for the most part) Lily was at the very first soiree where we came up with this years theme and joined on the journey to the day of the show
And special thanks to my sister Kath and her family to continue to open their arms in helping with Roxy and Violet... Although cute, can always be a handful!

Overall this small event was quite huge in my personal evolution and I thank everyone for letting me be me!
We raised well over $1000 in donations alone and folks are continuing to purchase No DISCIPLINE T shirts…. At the show we sold around 20+ and Alex’s purple cookies played their part in fundraising… thanks Alex

The Challenge of Change

Now the thing is that we cannot control everything... I gave up on that a while ago, and yet the thing we can change is our self talk while believing in the idea that perception is reality… and what you can control is your reaction to anything… the thing with change is that it comes from being too comfortable… when things seem effortless and almost brainless is when we just might need a wake-up call. Boy nothing like change to rock your world and throw you into frenzy.

As a young salon owner at 23 the hardest change and the biggest hurdles to get over when an employee would leave. For those who know my leadership style I am part personal trainer (the kind that pushes you do that last rep even thought you are dying) part rah rah cheerleader,( you can do it if you put your mind to it so do it… do it….) Sometimes a parent, but always someone who desires the best for the stylist, the assistant, the front desk person, the team. Now I do that by planting seeds of greatness, planting the desire for personal best and placing opportunity in front of everyone on my team.

Weather that was good or not, my own desire to be great helped me to attract others who also sought greatness. As we grew to over 100 employees it seemed all of the top spots were taken. These now coveted spots were then taken by people who put in their dues, who paved the way, and put sweat and tears, late nights, trial and error and sorrow and sadness into the endeavor to be great… much of the time for free, knowing that the end result would be worth a lot. Together we raised the bar and reaped the benefits.

So what I am saying is that building a team is tough and when I would loose a teammate for what ever reason it stung. Yet that left opportunity for those to have a shot at a new position…. Yet these newbie’s had no idea what they were in for… the tenured team made it look effortless, the new team had no idea what they were in for. It is lonely at the top at times, the classroom can be challenging along with the extra hours it takes sometimes to mentor a young assistant… I now call this altitude sickness that comes with change too quickly. You see when people earn a position that means they took all the steps to acclimate to the altitude at base camps all along the way. They also saw the value in the process and earned the right to enjoy the fruits of their labor in higher pay, opportunities to be a national educator, a mentor, leader and guru to the youth of our salon group.

When we made the leap and started a new salon with some of the youth that craved the prestige of leadership educational opportunities and a chance to be their best. The end result was wicked in the worst way. Instead of stepping up to the challenge these young stylists complained that I asked too much, I was accused a being a workaholic and that I had changed… I sum up the last statements and compare it to synchronized swimming… the swimmer above the water looks poetic and graceful, and yet below the water is frenzy of activity, hard work, fitness and long workouts to get there.
I am sorry that those that left our group recently did not understand that being the top 10% of our industry doesn’t come with out work…

Yet for me… the challenge of change is still melancholy when it comes in this form. I am sad for Holly that put her heart into her team and was so supportive and wonderful to them at every turn. Change for Holly this first heartache came with the blow of 5 of her busy stylist leaving with spite anger and downright selfishness…. yet as one or our youngest members of our team reminded me of my own words..."everyone is in their own evolution" how sweet are those words....

And yet here I am, embracing the challenge of change once again in my 30 year career more eager excited and enthusiastic for those who we continue to mentor and grow from the ground up....Holly being tough amazing and strong, is well on her way to the next level of leadership growth and what an exciting place that is to be… for both of us!

I read a great book a few years back called Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman.. It was then that I realized that there is an explanation to that mystical word talked of in the coffee houses in Boulder called "Energy". It was not the notion that I needed to bury a crystal in my backyard, or seek a mystic to get it... it comes from that deep down in your skin feeling of abundance, confidence and the fact that there is enough to go around. This also comes from the idea that when you point the finger 3 fingers point back at you…. That was what my dad always said.

So as a young leader with 6 salons and over 100 employees this message was impactful because of the higher purpose that I was compelled to have as a salon professional… I so want to make a difference… a chance to leave the world a better place than when I came into it….

Where does this fit in now… Creating Beauty Inside Out is the overarching philosophy for Arts and Education Form+Function and industrie Hairdressing and is our battle cry… it is what we are passionate about… and we are doing it… and we implore you to take on this message and create positive ripples of your own where ever you go and whatever you are doing!

With an economy less than great it was as if we had a crystal ball in our possession.

We are changing the paradigm of Hairdressing thru basic and advanced learning options for the student. We are achieving this thru hairstylist apprenticeship by taking the old view of how to stage a beauty school and moving from Good To Great

At Arts and Education, our students have higher expectations of themselves, and our entire team understands that people move toward thier currently dominant thought. Those who have been around me know that my management style is one the stems from the old adage: Treat a Man how you want him to be and he will begin to be that way. Much like Jean Valjean in Les Miserable.... Our Students are treated as though they are already amazing ...because truly they are. Our instructors practice both basket filling and basket drawing out; two very clear teaching styles that combine helping the students come to their own conclusions while giving them key elements.

Our Phylosophy
We must always respect others evolution and expect more; instilling belief... a confidence really, in the student. I think the bar, in many of our local schools are set too low. Our industry has made great strides in professionalism, and artistry in the salons... it is time for the schools to take another look at how we learn.. We at Arts and Education are re-setting that bar for those students who want to be immediately marketable in the high end demographic.

This is not your typical curriculum.
We have set up the program with 3 classroom elements combined with in salon apprenticeship. All 4 interact with each other for while fostering building blocks with unique and purposeful synergies.

The Future

The future is not someplace we are going…We are creating it.The paths to it are not found but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination-John Schaum

I knew from the day I started my first salon that I would create something special. Well special might not be the word... I want to say life altering but it is hair for goodness sake. So I will say uplifting since my goal is to help our employees be the best they can be so that they can in turn help their clients be the best they can be... hence "Creating-Beauty: Inside-->out"

So I set out on this journey at 1175 Walnut Street in Boulder Colorado as a 23 year old working my tail off behind the chair... (Shannon, my first assistant, and me)

We began to grow by attracting like-minded people into the fold... yet all along I so wanted to see growth, opportunity and a chance for hairdressers who wanted more... like I did, to come and join the cause.

That cause had to start with me getting better and not just banking on my personality to get the job done... but to "be" better… able to work from a solid foundation and then to pass that along to all I worked with... It was hard in the beginning for others to see or to even follow my vision... if you have not guessed by now I ask a lot of the people I work with. So the requirements became rigorous and I began to become a leader.... and in 1992, who better to introduce me to my now leadership style but James Morrison from Toni & Guy.

He shared with me Steven Covey's 7 habits of highly effective people. That book added to my own love of Abraham Maslow's management philosophy; and coupled with the teachings of my father... I began to lead by inspiration... not fear not manipulation but leading with the idea to inspire greatness from people... to expect great things from them and to trust that people would always rise to occasion.

And so I went on building the team... key people included Guy Knauer, Sennen Knauer, Donna Bell, and Julie Mustoffa... whose dedication to the vision was relentless. With these key people we set out training the next generation of leaders thru leadership trainings put into place all of those years ago... ahhh… looking back I was the one who gained the most for sure... because now I know know that thru teaching I became the best student.

From one assistant to a team of over 100 we together did have an impact. We worked on principals and values... we moved from good to great. We broke barriers, rules all in contribution to changinging an industry. To professionalize the work ethic of hairdressers, to improve the standards of working with a team and to do it with integrity, class, and an abundance mentality... we shared everything. We never held our hand close... but instead we placed the cards on the table and showed others how to play too.

Thru my work with Toni & Guy, MOP and all of those amazing MOPAs and numerous in salon talks I was asked to give, I was able to practice and "try things on" as a platform educator in front of all kinds of audiences and all kinds of sales teams. By having those great opportunities I fine tuned my message while sharing my ideas about our industry.

So here I am proud of my evolution happy with the way I have grown so far. Thankful for the many many co-workers, team mates and mentors for being with me on this evolution and now I am eager for the future.

The future.....? Creating Beauty:Inside->Out
Well here we are.

I welcome clients, co-workers past and present, students, and masters to join me in the evolution and to see where the rest of this road will take us... the future truly is not a place where we are going... it is something we will create.. And let it be said that I full well know that the thing that will change and grow the most will be me.

Wow what a welcome and what an enthusiastic team of students, facilitators and Professionals!

Marisa, one of our amazing team members at form + function HAIRDRESSING, came along with me for the ride and to help inspire young hairdressers concerning their goals, what to look for in a salon, and help student get a feel for what they want out of their career. Oh and did she ever! Between Marisa and I, we must have spoken with over 60 people!

We had a crowd around us waiting to consult with us... it was amazing how eager these young professionals were; great questions, motivated smiles, and overall hunger for greatness!

Thank you Regency Lakewood for your love of the industry and good luck to all of you on the what I think has been the most rewarding journey I could imagine in this amazing profession!

The best way to make these decisions and start the journey toward finding a career that fits your interests and abilities is to learn as much as possible about all of your options. You may want to go to college, but the cost is a challenge. Or maybe you have second thoughts and are not sure you're ready. Yet the thought of taking a low-wage job with no future that pays minimum wage is hardly appealing.

There is another option, which you may not have heard about:
Registered Apprenticeships.

We are excited to share with you a great opportunity for students seeking alternative post graduate learning options. We are a unique offering for students wishing to make a living in the art and service of hairdressing as our student curriculum is taught in part; as hairstylist apprenticeship. Students receive the basic knowledge required by the State Board of Cosmetology, in addition to a progressive and modern curriculum.

We believe in training that sets the student up for life and art. In addition to the hairdressing curriculum we have included public speaking, personal growth, goal setting and human relation skills, in serving the whole student for overall success.

The four learning categories we include in our curriculum include:
Basics, Fundamental Intensives, Apprenticeship and Open Studio

These categories blend together for the total learning package including earn while you learn. Yes… our students work in participating salons as part of the apprenticeship education and receive a wage while they learn!

Approved by the department of private occupational schools and registered apprentice in conjunction with the department of labor; we are changing the paradigm of traditional trade skill learning by offering apprenticeship learning–

Form+Function HAIRDRESSING was in idea I had about 5 years ago. Then, I had named it Luckystar.. hee hee... yet busy growing The Parlour and having the idea reprioritized again and again the concept came flooding back last spring when I sold The Parlour inc. .and pondered my future options.

My unquenchable desire to create something new, combined with the knowhow of over 20 years of training hairdressers and serving clients, I realized there was an entire demographic not having a chance to spread the Creating Beauty Inside->Out message, a whole group of hairdressers who need the right start and clients who need; convenience, a community driven location, and dare I will say it...? a value driven price… It was so clear in my mind …. I just had to give credence to the idea.

You keep making deposits to build up your account with others. Too many withdrawals will cause distrust. A full account allows for small slip ups until you begin to go into the ‘red”…then trust is something that many many many deposits can sometimes repair that trust….sometimes not.

What a great day for influencing our up and coming hairdressers! I was at a local cosmetology school where I went to share information about options, potential and pose questions about our industry. An eager group all in all as I taught a few haircut concepts and spoke about method, couture vs. prêt-a-porte, and overall customer service ideas.

Thank you students for welcoming me into your classroom.

An inexperienced leader once said to me that leadership happens in the day to day. While that being a bit true, it is part 5 or 6 in a series of conversations, trainings, and role playing exercises that must equip the leaders on how to lead. Natural leaders do not magically have all the tools that prepare them to lead much like a talented athlete who has no coach let alone training, work-outs etc, has only his raw gifts but no cultivation of those natural talents.

I have been teaching leadership since about 5 years into my career as a salon owner back in 1989. It was at that point that I realized that if I was going to build a successful salon in the sea of salons, I would need to create a culture where people do the right thing because it IS the "right thing to do" not just because it is "policy.”

In my mind creating a team culture and growing a company that is built to last does not happen overnight or by just having good people. However, as I travelled and taught leadership as a platform artist across the globe, I found this was not the norm and very few salons taught leadership to their teams... let alone at every level. The 360 degree leader is based on the concept that if you give permission for people to stand up to the mission at every level... not just from the top, you have reached your team on a level that empowers them to take pride, create the desire to become a great communicator and build a strong culture based on principles not rules. If everyone in the organization is asked to be a leader and then given the communication tools to back up their own leadership style you can have a winning team of not only independent individuals an interdependent team.
The 360 Degree Leader is a handbook, and roadmap in empowering and training teams from every level.

I read his book years ago and began an entire movement for my old company The Parlour... yet each individual and each groups evolution is so much filled with the ideal that we are never done with getting better. The minute you stop growing you are shrinking. Redefining a message and breathing new life into it is essential to the organizations ability to weather change and expect greatness. Creating Beauty: Inside-->Out is the evolution of a new standard that picks up where I left off in recognition that GOOD Is the enemy of great! Beginning anew, you can see from a distance all of the gaps in excellence as one company sunsets and the dawning of a new standard begins.

What a show.... What an event!
Ahhhh what a special night!!!! We are all still reeling from the joy, happiness and the success of the event!

We had so many well wishers and believers in creating beauty inside out at the launch of industrie HAIRDRESSING grand re-opening Sat night!!

The feedback we received was that people truly believed that working with our team in creating their own unique look is much more compelling than looking at outside sources for what you should look like. Weather you are a gypsy, an existentialist, or a socialite at heart... you should look and feel like the person inside with the help and magic of the right team of hairdressers…

Thanks so much to all of you who were able to make it out on Saturday night for the Eccentric Beauty Fashion Event. (and what a gorgeous night it was)

The enthusiasm from our guests about our message was palpable as we announced that Industrie HAIRDRESSING is....couture for hair.

I am supremely proud of the team for making the eccentric beauty message a reality on the runway.

Wow…. that is all I can say is WOW! Today I was at a salon fair and fashion event where I was deeply inspired by what I experienced. Over 50 some students participated in one way or another in a runway event sharing inspirational shapes and concepts that truly set the bar high when it comes to beauty school contributions AND the students participating were gracious and happy, while the students who watched where amazingly supportive and out right enthusiastic for the efforts of their fellow students. I would like to thank the many many participants who stopped by my booth and were sincerely interested in the creating beauty message... I even saw some old friends from the past who were both educators and students who warmed my heart and affirmed why I do what I do… all in the name of beauty from the inside out. Thank you everyone!!!

What a day! From clients in the salon congratulating us, to well wishers at the local elementary school as I meet my daughters teacher for fall conferences… Ahhh… and then to neighbors calling out from open car windows as I take Roxy and Violet for a walk in the neighborhood! All of them well wishers and supporters of what we do at industrie hairdressing. The great feeling you get when you walk in and are greeted with a warm welcome, to the fabulously skilled looks that are created behind the chair. I sleep soundly knowing we have such an amazing team bringing out the inner beauty of each and every client so that they reflect to the world (with their new cut and color) the genuine beauty that come from happiness. Life can be that simple and that sweet…. Thanks to all of the well wishers and special thanks to the parent who is also a fan of twitter and said he would twitter back!

Connecting So Soon Into The Launch

I was connecting to people who are following the progress of Creating Beauty and bam...I found some of the best people from my past in my life again!!! Thanks for speaking up and connecting with me and my passion for beauty from the inside out in a profession that appears very outside in. I am doing great! I just sold my salons last spring (all six of them) with the hopes of starting a fresh new concept reaching out to hairdressers students and clients from all walks of life. So many people are joining the movement and really embracing this very real kind of beauty ... the kind from within... only now with the confidence to let that beauty shine in the reflection of who they are weather they want to be soft strong eccentric glamorous modern retro punk hard-core rock and roll fancy classic hippie… it is who they are… and yes they are beautiful because it comes from within… not a magazine not a trend fad or the latest plastic surgery… but that light that shines… when someone feels right in their own skin… that’s the beauty I want to promote… beauty from the inside out.

Since May 2008( well much longer ago the seeds were planted in my earlier work) this idea of creating beauty has taken on such new life and feels more right than ever as the media, and social pressures plant seeds of sameness.

As we continue to generate places where people can gather to create their own unique beauty and feel right from the inside out, we find more and more believers reaching out for this message. From hair that is couture and customized to hair that is ready-to-wear, our clients and our team are embracing the journey to a world of hairdressing that is driven by suitable, unique, sometimes eccentric, but always in the vein of beauty… and always from the inside out.

Thru the elements of design and complete consultation concept we are unlocking a direction where we all feel right in our own skin and are able to shine so when others feel our light they shine too.

We are beginning a movement in our industry that it is better to be 100% your best self then 50% of someone else
